Well done to Jerry Halford on organizing this weekend warm up event before next months Viv Thomas Masters in Spain and thanks for the updates Jerry!

Date: 11th & 12th May 2013

Venue:  The Oxfordshire golf club – B&H Masters Championship course
20 persons
Day 1
Format: two ball better ball.
Everyone arrived nice and early at the Oxfordshire to wind and rain the start of a testing weekends golf, it was quickly apparent that with little or no cover on the course we would be battered by the weather whatever. Playing 4 balls were chosen and teams headed for the 1st Tee. It was the past & Current champions honour Paul Evans to drive off first partnered by local Golf professional Neal Granville, who shot and amazing -2 for the front nine.. Pauls drive set the tone for the day aiming 30 yards left and landing 50 yards right in the strong wind.
after  a grueling 5 hour plus round we gathered in the bar for the results..
Winners Day 1: Graham stone & Stephen Nicolas 40 points
Runners up:   Duncan Fudge and Frazer 38 points ( won on countback from Graham harris and Bear)
Longest drive: Davey Boothby
Nearest the pin: Simon Waby
Evening dinner
a 3 course Dinner was at 8pm and very well presented and very tasty too! Large quantities of wine and after dinner drinks saw most of us wobble off to bed shattered.
DAY 2
Format: as “day 3″ will be in Spain. 2 ball scramble, 8 drives each, half of the combined HC, then 2/3rds of that…
The SUN was shining the wind had dropped and all looked well for the second day only for the weather to change as we approached the 12:50 tee time..The weather was a little kinder to us for the front nine and turned to kick us all on the run home. This did not seem to affect the players and some very surprising scores came in.
Winners day 2; Paul Evans & Jerry halford (joint last on the first day) 46 points
Runners up: Duncan and Frazer (again) 44 points
Longest drive: Davey (again)
Nearest the pin: Simon (again)

Now that you have all paid, there is no going back! Here is a little insight into Puerto Banus if you weren’t with us two years ago for the 2011 Viv Thomas Masters.

Let me tell you, most of the guy’s jaws were on the floor – there are tons of gorgeous gold diggers roaming the streets.

North AmericansYup, the yanks look they are getting ALL dolled up for the upcoming Masters, and so they should! After all, these are the guys who inspired Viv to create an “outlandish dress day”:

Friday 6th, should really be fun, provided everybody plays ball. With Joel and Harmik setting the bench- mark last year, we’ve decided that Friday is the day for the most outrageous outfits allowed onto a golf course. This can be done individually or in your teams and anything goes, as long as you meet with the standards of etiquette as set by the R&A.

Have you got yours yet?

Woburn Golf Club

From last years winner, Paul Evans:

Finally got the clubs out played at a little course called ‘Woburn’. Only got 34 points it was a bit cold. The warm up for VT Masters has begun!!!

Have you started your warm up for June yet? It’s going to be HOT down in Marbella.

Well Gents things really did move quickly this time. Registrations came in fast and furiously, which really did take us all by surprise.

We have 44 players confirmed and basically we can only really accommodate 40 players. John Graham and his Spanish Amigos are trying to make a plan with the tee times, we now need 11 times instead of the limit of 10 already stipulated by the clubs.

This is not to mention the 6 guys who are all on stand-by in the event of any cancellations. :-( (

Nick and I have been in discussions about the format for next year, whilst sipping a few Casal Garcia’s in the 19th at our local Benamor.

We both agreed that the general format of 4 x betterball competitions for each of the days should remain. We are open to suggestions.

However we have a few ideas that we’d like to put in place for next year. So we’re giving you loads of time to get your shit together, anybody who fails to comply will be facing heavy fines.

For those of you that have played in Pro-ams around the world, you will know that it is customary to hold an auction during the welcome dinner preceding the tournament. Where you’re able to bid/purchase your favorite Pro and and your Pro-am team.

On Monday evening the 3rd June we will be holding an auction of the various teams playing that week. You will be able to purchase the team you consider as possible overall winners, including your own team if you’re feeling lucky. There will also be an auction for the team most likely to win the wooden spoon. The entire pot will be split up and awarded pro-rata to the purchasers of the first 3 teams and the losers. Nick thinks that we should put some of this money aside as a tip for the Staff at Sierra Park, any thoughts?

Fortunately or unfortunately we had the tremendous pleasure of hosting 2 guys from the USA this year, for the very first time. I say unfortunately because they did set a new trend each day, with some of their outrageous golfing attire, which both Nick and I think should be embraced for 2013. Example appended.

And here comes the bad news, for some of you grumpy old farts, each day is going to have a dress code. Remember there will be VERY heavy fines imposed.

Tuesday 4th, will be the traditional VivThomas shirts as supplied by VT, worn with black or dark trousers or shorts.

Wednesday 5th, will be trilby day, each and every player will have to play with a trilby hat on. These can be from straw through to those fancy Swiss leather jobs, up to you, but it’s trilby day. This idea was prompted from a tour competition played on the US circuit by invited elite amateurs out there.

Thursday 5th. is the team day. Each team has to establish their betterball playing name and team colors preferably with logos etc. the more conspicuous the better. You need to co-ordinate with your playing partner to ensure you turn up with the same gear for Thursday. Those of you who do not have a playing partner confirmed as yet, I will do my best to get this done ASAP.

There will be prizes each day for the best dressed team and where applicable the best/worst dressed individual.

Folks we’re looking to make this trip to Spain one to remember and to boast about in the pubs, for many years to come.

Any thoughts, we’d like to hear from you.

Cheers and happy swinging!!

Viv Thomas

Hello Gents,

In the last few days I’ve had a number of e-mails requesting confirmation of the dates and venue for next years Annual VT Masters. I realise that it is still a long way off, but I thought it best if I let you all know now, so you can pencil it into your plans for 2013.

I’m happy to confirm that we’ll be back in Spain, with John Graham and his crew at Sierra Park, just outside Puerto Banus. I’m quite sure a number of you will never forget that place after our last trip there in 2011.

The dates for the Spanish trip will be arriving 4th 3rd and departing 8th June. Anybody wishing to stay on for an extra day on the 9th and depart on Monday 10th, you may do so at no extra charge for the room.

The cost for the week will be Eu950-00 per player, which includes single accommodation, dinner bed and breakfast, 4 rounds of golf with buggies. Welcome drinks on the Monday evening with dinner at Sierra Park, after golf each day dinner with wine at some of the local Spanish joints in the area, finally prize giving dinner back at Sierra Park on the Friday evening. All transport to and from the airport and golf courses is included.

John has 36 bedrooms for single accommodation, with an additional 3 bedrooms sharing, making a possible total of 42 visiting players. Any questions please do not hesitate to let me know by filling in the contact form or my direct email.

All the very best,

Viv
